Playing the Fool and Being Underestimated : Absurdity of Life : Why Me?

By Adam Mundorf

Playing the Fool and Being Underestimated
I've always been known somewhat as being a fool, oftentimes at my own expense.  Seriousness is never and will never be my forte, especially when it comes to everyday activities.  Now for sure, if the stakes were higher I would be as serious as I needed to be.  The stakes in daily life just aren't simply high enough.

I'm admittedly a bit of an anomaly.  In private, I'm extremely calculated.  I'm talking spreadsheets, reading books, physical culture, pondering, introspection, wondering and lots of unpublished writing.  It's really really strange, I'll be the first to admit it.  It leads me to be underestimated often.  They think the clown I play, is the person I am but it's only one half of me and I can turn it off like a switch if need be.

I'm just saying, don't underestimate people who have a sense of humor, seemingly all of the time.  Some of the most intelligent people I know are playing the fool because they realize how absurd and meaningless life really is.  In more severe cases, they use humor to avoid harming others.

Absurdity of Life
Life is absurd.  If you take life too seriously, I feel bad for you.  There's no meaning to any of this.  Just take a walk through the local cemetery and look at how many forgotten graves there are.  Nobody gives a fuck.  All that stuff that worried you, was nonsense.  All those 'achievements' you received throughout your professional career.....discarded.  Unless you are incredibly special and make a mark on history, you will quickly be forgotten.  If you die during your working years, you'll get a Facebook post from your company and well......that's it.  Your job will be posted ASAP and the show goes on.

Do you even know your great grandparents name or anything about them?  Many people don't and this should prove how fruitless all of this is.

Listen, I'm not saying not plan for the future, call open season on your health or treat your life like it's fleeting.

The best thing I can say is figuratively forget but learn from the past, look forward to the future and always live in the present.  That is why we have to laugh and have a good time because all of this is so ridiculous.

Why Me?
I often ask myself why I am so fortunate.  Why did I win the roulette table of life?  I was born in America, white, rich, no major health problems and adopted by wonderful parents.  I could've been some 'look at me I am the Captain now' man in Somalia.  I'm not sure if there's an equation to life, I'm not seeing.

This leads even more to the absurdity of this existence.  We're worried about bullshit like expense reports and 401ks while some poor kid (through no fault of his own...as far as I know) is worried about famine and/or being a child soldier.

Why me over them?  I'm so grateful but can't help but ask myself that question over and over again.

If there is a God I'm not sure how nice of an entity he is.
